Medieval latin drama: an attempt to identify the ''quantitative parts''
Summary:
There are many parts of Aristotle’s poetic theory known as universalia, given the fact that they can be applied through the years. As for the quantitative parts of tragedy, they cannot be applied without any changes. This master thesis discusses the changes in structure of three medieval latin plays, covering a period of one hundred and sixty years. The structure of a medieval latin play is closer to that of a modern play (actions, scenes) than to that of the quantitative parts of Aristotle. Since dramas are indissolubly connected to rituals and their performances took place in a ritual context, western Christian adoration should also be considered as far as their structure is concerned.
