Prevalence of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in children
Summary:
Introduction: Allergic rhinitis, eczema and asthma are diseases that have worldwide prevalence and are known as different perspectives of the "atopic march". As far as AR and AD are concerned, an increase of prevalence in our country has been noted in children. According to the third phase of International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), the prevalence of AR has a spectrum between 1,4-39,7% in children aged from 12 to 14 years old while the atopic dermatitis is from 10-20%, up to almost 1/5 of children! Purpose: an estimation of prevalence of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in children aged from 12 to 14 years old in Athens in 2020 and compare those results with a respective research that has been made 25 years ago in 1995-96.
Materials: Global Asthma network's (GAN) questionnaire translated in greek.
Methods: during school year of 2019-2020 1,934 children aged from 12 to 14 years old were chosen from 20 public and private schools of the broad area of Athens. The students and their parents were asked to fill the greek version of GAN's questionnaire about asthma and allergies. In the second phase the data were collected and transferred in database in order to make statistical analysis and measure the prevalence of AR and AD. Finally those results were compared with that of the previous research which took place with 2561 children aged between 12 and 14 years old.
Results: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis has been found to 13.9% of the children participated in the research and the prevalence of on topic dermatitis was 12.2% respectively. A positive history of atopic dermatitis in any age has been shown to have positive correlation with the possibility of allergic rhinitis and specifically those individuals have twice as chances for AR. What is more, asthma has shown a positive correlation with allergic rhinitis and those individuals have 66% more chances to express AR. Last but not least, the presence of wheezing in any age has shown also a positive correlation and those individuals have 6% more chances to express AR. Comparing our results with the previous research in 1995, a raise of prevalence in AR about 1,3% has been noted in Athens in about 25 years. Similarly, there is an increase and bigger one in the prevalence of atopic dermatitis about 8.3%.
Conclusions: this cross-sectional study has shown the increased prevalences of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in children and specifically in children between 12 to 14 years old. Those results compared with those 25 years ago have shown the increase of prevalence in both AR and AD. The prevalence of the latter has tripled. All of the above mentioned are an indicator that those diseases have a social and economic impact on our country, are cause of frequent visits in pediatricians and consequently need vigilance and awareness.
