Mapping of factors that are related to the energy consumption in buildings in the area of Attica
Summary:
The European Union is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95% below 1990 levels by 2050. Higher energy performance buildings and the use of renewable energy sources in existing and new buildings are expected to play a major role in achieving this aim. This focus is well grounded, as energy consumption in buildings accounts for roughly 40% of Europe’s total final energy consumption and the share of households being 27% of the total.
In order to have a practical impact on the reduction of building energy consumptions, The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) obliges Member States to define minimum requirements of energy performance of buildings and building components with a view to achieving this objective.
In this framework, the factors that affect the energy needs of buildings should first be identified. In this work, we made an effort in order to identify and understand these factors, focusing our study on the region of Attica.
The methodology followed in this study can be divided into three main axes: a) climatic classification of Attica region, b) identification of the most characteristic buildings in Attica, c) theoretical calculation of the energy needs of the buildings.
The main conclusion of this project is that there are several factors, which affect the energy efficiency of a building. Due to this fact in cases of decision making, all these factors should be studied at the same time. At this point, we should mention that the most crucial ones are the microclimate close to the building and the land uses of the nearby area.
