Proteomics approaches for molecular profiling of multiple myeloma
Summary:
Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common
malignancy of blood and one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
Various clinical samples, including body fluids (blood serum, plasma, cell
lines) and tumor tissues have been widely investigated using modern highthroughput mass spectrometry-based proteomic approaches aiming to identify
the precise molecular mechanism of MM, in order to discover novel
biomarkers and therapeutic strategies that would direct the development of
new targeted more effective drugs for predicting the disease outcome and
improve survival of patients with MM.

Areas Covered: This review is based on an updated systematic literature
search on PubMed with regard to the proteomic analysis of biological samples
for the study of multiple myeloma (MM). Studies performed during the last 5
years using proteomic technologies, as well as the results of the selected
studies and conclusions are summarized.

Summary: During the last 5 years in the field of proteomics the advent of
more effective methods led to the discovery of causes and effects of ΜΜ. In a
bid to identify innovative diagnostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic
targets we expect that in the near future the integration of these proteomics
approaches with clinical information, will expand the knowledge for molecular
profiling of multiple myeloma and will offer the opportunity to implement
personalized medicine approaches that will improve patient management.
