Acoustic study of the idiophone musical instrument XPOIA steel tongue drum
Summary:
Tongue drum is a term used to describe a group of struck metallic musical instruments, which consist of two hemispherical shells that are fastened together along the circumference. Sound is produced by delivering rapid strikes to elliptical shaped slits called tongues. This study focuses in a variation of tongue drum called XPOIA. The main characteristic of this instrument is its ability to be tuned by adding weight on the tongues with magnets. Since there is no previous research on the sound of Tongue drums, there is a great deal of influence from the studies of the Hang, which shares the most similarities structurally. Three instruments were given, two of which were XPOIA and one was Tongue drum. This report describes in detail the design and implementation of the experimental procedure of recording, analyzing and comparing the results of the given instruments. The main goal is to manifest the sound characteristics of the instrument as well as the parameters that affect the sound. Last but not least I built a Kontakt library from the same instrument.
