The role of JAK 1/2 kinases in the development of neurogenic heterotopic ossification following spinal cord injury
Summary:
Neurogenic heterotopic ossification is a complex disease that is characterized by the formation of heterotopic bone in soft tissues following central nervous system injuries and various neurological disorders. The exact mechanism of the disease and the factors that play a role in its development are as of yet unknown and they comprise a promising research field. The understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease may help in its timely diagnosis and the discovery of more effective ways of treatment.
The JAK-STAT signaling pathway is a mechanism of cellular signaling that is involved in many processes of the organism, such as the development of the skeletal system and the differentiation and proliferation of cells of the nervous system. There are also various research data that prove the role of this pathway in the regulation of the neuroinflammatory response that follows spinal cord injuries. In particular, the role of JAK1 and JAK2 tyrosine-kinases in the aforementioned processes has been studied and it has been shown to be of particular importance in ensuring their proper function. Moreover, their role during the inflammatory process after spinal cord injuries in combination with their role in the nervous and skeletal system, makes them interesting from a research viewpoint in regards to their role in the development of neurogenic heterotopic ossification following spinal cord injuries.
The purpose of this study is the research of the bibliography concerning the role of these tyrosine-kinases in the development of neurogenic heterotopic ossification following spinal cord injuries. For this purpose, a search was performed in the PubMed database using various key words and rejection criteria. The articles yielded from this search were then used in the synthesis of this study.
