TARGET2 is the real-time gross settlement system of the European Union. It is controlled by the Market Infrastrucure Board of the European Central Bank and it settles Euro-denominated transactions in the Eurozone. The first part sets out the theoretical background of real-time grossbsettlement systems, while the second focuses on the historical, theoretical and technical aspects of this system. The third part focuses on its specialized, yet crucial role in the debt crisis of Eurozone Member-States (2010). Finally, the conclusion refers to the traditional role of payment systems in monetary and financial stability.
