Mediation of society’s prescriptions of gender in the relationship between Self-perception and Choice of Studies for Men and Women
Summary:
In the present study the relation of men and women’s self-perceptions of the ability in science and humanities with the choice of studies is being examined among students and higher education graduates. In addition, the mediation of society’s prescriptions of gender in the above relationships is being examined. On the basis of review of literature, it was expected that men and women will choose studies in different scientific fields in relation with their self-conceptions and the prescriptions of gender. The sample consisted of 270 students and university graduates, of which 80 men and 190 women (mean age: 23,3 years). Participants were provided with a questionnaire devised for the purposes of the cross-cultural research project Towards Gender Harmony, which studies social perceptions of masculinity and femininity in 42 countries, among them in Greece. The results confirmed the direct –but not the indirect–relation of self-perception of participants about their abilities in science and humanities with their choice of studies. Contrary to the research hypotheses, the results showed that there is no significant mediation of the prescriptions of gender in the relationship between self-perception and choice of studies. It was also found that the ability in science constitutes mostly masculine desirable trait, while the ability in humanities constitutes mostly feminine desirable trait. Women’s reports were in greater agreement with the prescriptions of gender, compared to men’s reports.
