Original Title:
Is Spain Still Enthralled with the European Project?
Translated title:
¿Sigue España cautivada por el proyecto europeo?
Summary:
Spain has traditionally been characterized as one of the more europhile member states
of the European Union (EU). At the turn of the 21st century, however, the predominantly
favourable stance was undermined by three events - the Eurozone crisis, domestic political
instability, and the Catalonian independence referendum - that gave ground to the rapid
diffusion of eurocritical sentiments. Evidence shows that a majority of Spaniards today have
restored their aspirations and faith in the project. Original empirical research was conducted
in Madrid in December 2019 via a questionnaire that a group of 36 Spanish students and
teachers voluntarily and anonymously filled out, in order to gain a realistic understanding of
the existing data and literature on the subject. My findings illustrate that Spaniards are once
more content, even enthusiastic and optimistic, about the Union and their country’s
membership. Future attitudes are considerably unpredictable given the novel coronavirus
outbreak and its unfolding consequences that could alter the setting again.
