Borderline personality features in adolescents who address to therapy due to anxiety and depression symptoms
Summary:
The purpose of this research was to study the presence of borderline personality features (BPF) in a clinical sample of adolescents in Greece, in order to contribute to early intervention, more effective therapy and prevention of borderline personality disorder in adult life. The sample was twenty (20) adolescents, that were addressed to private and public services due to emotional and anxiety difficulties and particularly, to open community mental health services unit for psychotherapy, namely the Children and Adolescents Therapy Department of the Institute of Behavioral Research and Therapy (IBRT), others who addressed to the Psychiatric Department for children and adolescents of Sismanoglio public hospital and to psychologists in private practice. According to findings 30% of the participants had borderline personality features. There were no differences observed on the borderline personality features between genders. Moreover, the presence of depressive symptoms correlates to emotion instability, identity problems, and the general score at Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children (BPFSC-11). Thus, the intensity of borderline personality features was positively associated with the severity of depressive symptoms. The key findings are similar to those of respective international research. Finally, we discussed limitations of research and proposals for further research.
