Cultural transformations in Eastern Crete and the Neopalatial - Postpalatial change: the case study of Mochlos.
Summary:
The end of the neopalatial period in Crete is marked by severe destructions that affected
many of the sites on the island. The period that followed shows strong differences at
various levels in comparison to the past. After the destruction of the palaces during the
LM IB period, the only palace that continued to operate was that of Knossos. Moreover,
many neopalatial sites were reoccupied. However, significant differences are identified
in relation to the neopalatial period, most interestingly the import of features with
Mycenaean mainland origins. The site of Mochlos is such a case. The import of these
new features has been interpreted in terms of cultural change, which does not allow the
understanding and identification of the factors that contributed to these transformations.
For this reason, the site of Mochlos has been here employed as the main case-study for
the examination, on the one hand of the parameters or conditions that enabled this
change and, on the other hand, of the ways and mechanisms through which the new
features were integrated and operated in the society Mochlos. To this purpose, recent
approaches are here employed as a theoretical basis, which hinge upon dynamic and
flexible models of society, thus overcoming older interpretations of the LM III society
as static and passive.
