The heroic figure of Markos Botsaris in Italian literature and Italian theater.
Summary:
The Greek Revolution of 1821 is not simply a historical fact, which affected a specific place, but had a decisive influence throughout Europe, serving as a model for the people who experienced the brutality of authoritarian regimes of the time. In this context, the phenomenon of philhellenism was developed and reinforced by the presence of Greek scholars and merchants, who conveyed the events and, in combination with the Europeans' appreciation of ancient Greek culture, created a strong trend, expressed in various forms of art. A special source of inspiration was the heroic achievements of the Greeks, who, despite the fact that they were numerically disadvantaged, were called to face their conquerors. Markos Botsaris was among the most popular personalities of this battle and became a central theme of the poetry and theater of the 19th century. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the presence of the Greek hero Markos Botsaris in the Italian literature and the Italian theater. As it will be shown, the hero of the Greek Revolution inspired great writers and contributed to the promotion of the ideal of Freedom, being a means of expression and claim for the European peoples, who were attempting to shape their national identity.
