Summary:
Low social support and poor marital relationships are considered risk factors for postpartum depression. Moreover, women with postpartum depression tend to have impairments in their maternal self-confidence. This study aims to investigate the associations between psychosocial factors and postpartum depression. Data were obtained online from 100 mothers (Ν=100). Postpartum depression was identified by Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The prevalence of postpartum depression was 21% with an EPDS cut off point of 11 or higher. The marital status of the participants and their marital satisfaction were found to be independently related to their maternal self-confidence. Married women scored lower on self confidence , compared to the rest, while the more satisfied they were with their husbands, the more their maternal self-confidence increased. Employed women scored significantly lower on the EPDS scale than those who were self-employed or unemployed. There also appears to be a significant positive correlation between the overall EPDS score, and the time elapsed for women to return to work after giving birth. In addition, it was found that higher marital satisfaction, maternal self-confidence, satisfaction with social support and educational level were associated with significantly fewer symptoms of postpartum depression.
