Biomimetics: from plant Biology to modern (bio-inspired) materials
Summary:
Nature is an unlimited source of inspiration for humanity as it has provided solutions to many problems that have concerned researchers all over the world. The science of Biomimetics is based on the observation of structures and systems that occur in nature; the aim of biomimesis is to copy and imitate traits of ambient organisms in order to produce modern materials with new, innovative properties. Special emphasis is given to superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces as well as structural colors. This Diploma Thesis focuses on the living organisms which inspired Biomimetics and led to the construction of modern (bio-inspired) materials. Moreover, a variety of bio-inspired materials which were recently produced is presented, including some Greek innovations. An important part of this Thesis is the design and elaboration of a questionnaire on Plant Biomimetics, which was distributed to second year students in the Biology Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The analysis of the results of the questionnaire offered conclusions not only for the students' knowledge in the subject of Biomimetics but also for their interest in this specific field of science.
