Summary:
Introduction: Links between diet, exercise, physical and mental health have systematically been reported in many studies.
Other surveys have been designated the contribution of body image which is the imaginative depiction of the body that comes from interaction of the assumptions, the sentiments and the behaviors.
Orthorexia Nervosa is a relatively new phenomenon characterized by an obsessive fixation on eating healthily for the purpose of achieving health and can be harmful to the individual.
Purpose: Τhe main purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of Orthorexia Nervosa in students of Physical Education Department and its relationship with body image and other factors (BMI, Eating Disorders, gender).
Method: The research took place in Physical education department of Athens University. The participants (Ν=120) completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of four measures: ORTO-15, MBSRQ-AS, Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) and EAT-26.
Results: According to our results 10% of the sample (N=12) fulfilled the criteria for Orthorexia Nervosa using a cut-off point <35 at the ORTO-15 total score. Dramatically higher scores of orthorexia would be shown using a cut-off point <40 (81,6%). 31,6% of the sample fulfilled the criteria for eating disorders, using the EAT-26 scale. Statistical Important differences were found in subscales of MBSRQ-AS (Appearance- weight) [ p<0,019] and SPAS, between women and men. No other important result revealed.
Conclusions: This study was an attempt to investigate Orthorexia Nervosa and its relationship with body image in physical education university students. It can provide useful results for better understanding of this phenomenon. Drawing general conclusions requires further research.
