Forming impressions about the characters in Yannis Maris’s “Murder Backstage”: A cognitive-textual approach
Summary:
This thesis aims to discuss the formation of impressions about the characters in a Greek detective novel, drawing upon Culpeper’s cognitive stylistic approach to characterisation. At first, the “realist”, “purist” and cognitive approaches to character are presented, with particular emphasis given on the latter. Since Culpeper’s model (2001) is mainly concerned with characters in drama, additional analytical tools are used. Furthermore, examples concerning the “manipulation” of the reader through various techniques are discussed. In addition to examining excerpts of the novel and making hypotheses about the readers’ constructions of characters, we also focus on the quantitative results of measurements relevant to speech and thought presentation and point of view in the novel.
