Summary:
The experience of the long course of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros (in 2022, 35 years of continuous operation will be completed) is a reference point for the museum reality in Greece.
This study begins with the mapping of the museums of fine arts that were founded and operate in Athens and the Greek periphery in recent decades. It continues by capturing the steps of the historical route of the museum in Andros, while recording the important stops that shaped the collecting policy and the artistic vision of its founders.
The study, then, approaches the course of the museum in time, the exhibitions it organized, its concurrent activities, as well as its national (but also global) range of impact and radiance, as recorded historically in the newspaper indexes and the reports of its visitors.
Then follows the examination of its intertemporal relationship with the local community of Andros (placing this relationship in the historical and socio-economic context of this region) and the importance of its influence in shaping the current image of the island, through interviews with residents.
The study arrives at the “paradox” of the founding of the brother museum in Athens: a metropolitan museum of contemporary art, born out of the, now justified, experience of a regional museum organization. The history of the route to the final erection of the museum in the area of Pangrati, its current operation and its activities are recorded.
A questionnaire was also drafted and a public survey was conducted during the construction of the museum. 81 people we met in the area round the newly built museum answered. The questions focused on the museum under construction and the public’s expectations of it. Of the twenty-five questions, five also referred to the museum in Andros.
The conclusions that complete the study answer the question of the importance and significance of a regional museum project today and the power and dynamics of its influence inside and outside its local context.
