The outcome of elderly patients in intensive care units
Summary:
Τhe progress of medical science has led to a significant increase in average life time . The aging of the population has as a consequence a significant percentage of ICU patients being elderly or of highly advanced age. With the passage of age, the elderly develop disorders of the respiratory system, circulatory system, renal function, musculoskeletal system, nervous system, immune response and food intake. These changes contribute to the increased mortality observed among the elderly patients of the Intensive Care Unit. The coexistence of other diseases assessed by the CCI co-morbidity scale, the vulnerability assessed by the CFS scale and the severity of the disease, calculated with the APACHE and SAPS systems, are prognostic factors in the ICU, but have not been adequately studied in the elderly. In the present study, the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of patients over the age of 75 who were hospitalized in the ICU during the period 01/01/2015 to 31/12/2018 were studied. Their median age was 80.48 years. Thirty-four patients (48%) were male. The most common co-morbidities of the patients concerned arterial hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes mellitus. The most common causes of ICU are acute respiratory failure and pneumonia. Fiftynine patients (84%) were reported as vulnerable. The most common reasons for admission to ICU are acute respiratory failure and pneumonia. Fifty-nine patients (84%) were reported as vulnerable. The results of the study showed the effect of gender, hemodialysis and vulnerability on patient outcome. Specifically, men patients undergoing hemodialysis but also patients with a high degree of vulnerability were more likely to die after staying in the ICU.
