Maurice Ravel, Sonatine for piano: Issues of interpretation
Summary:
Τhis thesis attempts a performance analysis of Maurice Ravel's Sonatine. The Sonatine’s basic structural elements, its musical terminology and the explicit instructions by the composer are discussed in the first part of the thesis. The second part offers an analysis of fifteen Sonatine's performances by pianists of all times; a transcription for flute, viola and harp is also taken into consideration. The interpretation issues that arise in our analysis are as follows: the thematic and motivic cyclisism, the role of the canon in the minuet as well as issues related to tempo and pοlyphony.
