The history and evolution of urban terrorism in Europe after the Second World War
Summary:
The goal of this dissertation is the examination of the phenomenon of urban terrorism in post world war two Europe, emphasizing on the ideological background and the reasons for choosing terrorist methods to promote political goals and on the other hand, the actions of various organizations in the light of the fluid present and near future geopolitical conditions.
The first chapter gives an extensive presentation of the origins of terrorism, the reasons for choosing these methods and the motives of the organizations, while at the same time analyzes their ideological background, their structure and tactics – with a separate reference to Islamic terrorism – and concludes with a description of basic methods and the challenges that the security services of a country have to face in the fight against terrorism.
Continuing in the second chapter, some basic facts are presented for the creation, the political background, the historical context, the organization and the actions of anarchist and far-left terrorist organizations, while in the same way, in the third chapter, we have the respective analysis of the far-right organizations. A key element of this categorization is that the organizations of these two chapters acted with the aim of overthrowing the established regimes in their country in contrast to the nationalist organizations, analyzed in the same way in the fourth chapter, which aimed at gaining independence or autonomy, despite the fact that they had the same political orientation as the organizations of the second and third chapters.
The fifth chapter deals with the new danger that has arisen for Europe in the form of the actions of Islamic organizations as a consequence of the Western and Russian military interventions in the Middle East and the Caucasus and concludes with the sixth chapter which analyzes the challenges of the near future.
