Translated title:
Aristotle's criticism of Plato's Idea of the Good
Summary:
Aristotle shaped his philosophical system discoursing with the thought of Plato. However, the philosophy of the Stagirite philosopher is unquestionably independent, since, unlike Plato, he based his theory on the tangible facts of experience. We can metaphorically say that Plato philosophized by turning his gaze to heaven while Aristotle turned it to earth. The Aristotelian criticism of the Platonic Idea of the Good reveals the fundamental differences between the two philosophical systems in question.
The present study aims to record and analyze the elements of the aristotelian teaching that constitute, directly or indirectly, a criticism of the Plato’s Idea of the Good. The aim is to clearly display the elements of this aristotelian critisism as well as to adequately present the relevant platonic views. The ultimate goal of the present study is to demonstrate the contrast between the platonic idealism and the aristotelian realism by projecting the views of the two philosophers on the supreme good.
In the present study, the basic points of the Plato's theory of Ideas and the characteristics of the platonic Idea of the Good are, at first, recorded and described. Next, Aristotle's critisism of the overall theory of Plato's Ideas is briefly examined. The main part of the present study refers to the Aristotelian critisism of Plato's Idea of the Good on an ontological, epistemological and moral level. Finally, we examine the relationship between the Platonic Idea of the Good and the concept of God in Aristotle.
