Legitimacy and apostasy in the political conflicts and the civil war during the Greek War of Independenc
Summary:
The present dissertation comprises an attempt to look into the facts of the Greek War
of Independence in the light of the legitimizing narratives that existed and were
produced in the field of political rivalries and internal conflicts. The framework of
legitimacy of the Greek Revolution was determined in relation to the ideological and
political realities of post-war Europe. The political domination of the traditional
provincial leaders and the political opponents of the representative of Filiki Eteria,
Dimitrios Ypsilantis, is connected with the de-legitimization of the (radical)
revolutionary speeches, as well as with the condemnation of the secret political societies
and the promotion of legitimacy based on the restoration of ethnicity and religion
against the "illegal" Ottoman rule. The strengthening of the military party in the context
of war -which was in conflict with the old local authorities- and its demand to control
the political field accelerated the processes of power concentration by the nation-state.
The government upheld the Law of the Nation against the established military and
political practices of disobedience which were identified with "apostasy". In the context
of civil war and the political effect of government rule in the Peloponnese provinces,
the traditional provincial leaderships united with the military faction and promoted a
concept of "legitimacy" based on local law and regional privileges which were
threatened as a whole.
