Summary:
SUMMARY
This paper constitutes an attempt of re-approaching the Cretan history during the period of Venetian rule (1211-1669) from a Venetian-Cretan family’s perspective, the Corner. Having as a base the factual material which was elicited mainly from bibliography and published material, the genealogy, the operation and the structure of that specific family is collected. In the same time, the status and the action of that family in a collective level, such as the Administration, the Church, the Education, the Benevolence is demonstrated. Additionally, the material life and the systematical effort of the family’s members to ensure their posthumous fame, is examined. Coming from Venice, where the Corner family were recognized for their collective action, in Crete after its Venetian conquest, they obtained rights in the society in a position accordingly to Venetian nobles, because they rose to senior local positions, while developing a variety of activities in all aspects of public life in Crete. The members of the Corner family after the Crete’s conquest by the Turks, left for Venice where they integrated smoothly into society following the fortunes of their city.
