Placental pathology
Summary:
The placenta is one of the most misunderstood and neglected tissues in anatomical pathology. It is a non permanent but transient organ that lasts only as long as the pregnancy. However, it is of tremendous value for doctors to understand whether or not a pregnancy will go ahead. It is also a unique organ in that it is composed of two genomic contributions and cells derived from the maternal tissue that invade the placenta during pregnancy. Over the last 50 years, the human placenta has gradually become more understood in terms of its function and, at the same time, its pathological features have been more clearly described. Some features are characteristic of some maternal diseases, while others determine fetal conditions. During embryonic development, the placenta functions both as a sole agent of human coexistence and as an embryonic kidney, respiratory, hepatic, gastrointestinal, endocrine and immune system.
The placenta is an instrument with many mysteries. There are so many interesting and clinically important questions that affect the health of all of us that remain unanswered and that their answer will shed lots of light on health and evolution.
