Original Title:
Βυζαντινοί και Τουρκομάνοι κατά τον πρώτο αιώνα της παλαιολόγειας εποχής. Η εικόνα του Άλλου.
Translated title:
Byzantines and Turkomans during the first century of the palaeologan era. The image of the Other.
Summary:
The crystallization of the image of the Other is a complex and multidimensional issue, which however can contribute to a better understanding of the Byzantine world. The purpose of this study is, through the example of the Turkomans, to make clear not only the Byzantine conceptions of the Turks and to highlight the corresponding images, but also to show the way in which the Byzantines perceived otherness.
In order to achieve these goals, the work is not limited to a one-sided approach, but instead it examines the issue from three distinct thematic categories. The first is the terminology used in the Byzantine texts for the Turkomans, the second is the characteristics of the Turkomans, as those were attibuted to them by the sources, and the third is related to the ideological currents created at that time to explain the Turkish advance at the expense of the Byzantine state. All these, of course, have to be integrated into the historical context of the period and therefore the presentation of historical developments becomes necessary for a more complete understanding of the subject.
