"The depiction of Ecumenical Councils in Greece and Cyprus: From wall paintings to icons (13th-17th c.)"
Summary:
The depiction of the Ecumenical Councils was a rare iconographic theme that was included in the religious painting of the monuments throughout time and geographical spread of the Byzantine Empire. Religious councils, convened by the highest secular authority and condemning religious apostasy, permeate the iconography of temples and even secular buildings.
The Synods were established in the religious history of Byzantium as a right of the Church, which was exercised when there was danger of disintegration and the integrity of the Church was threatened.
The present work will examine the iconography of the Synods, as depicted in the monuments of Greece and Cyprus. The first depictions of the Ecumenical Councils were found in monuments a few years after the last Council was completed. Moreover, this iconographic theme is most often depicted during the post-Byzantine period. At that time it was painted on icons and especially on the frescoes of large religious and monastic centers, such as Mount Athos and Meteora.
The depiction of the Synods in the large pilgrimage centers is consistent with the spread of the Cretan art in mainland Greece. Furthermore, this paper describes the influences received by the depiction of the specific iconographic theme, the shaping of the iconography of the Synods, as well as the way in which the composition of the Synods was shaped as a theme combined with the representations of sacred episodes from the Christian faith.
