Accessible Electronic Forms: comparative evaluation of development tools, creation instructions and accessibility check tools
Summary:
The present thesis concerns the problem faced by people with disabilities who cannot access printed forms and the accessible digital content of documents that comes to address this problem. Many people with various types of disabilities, nowadays, are unable to access printed forms, something that marginalizes them from society and the simple, everyday situations of life. Accessible digital forms give these people the opportunity to interact with documents on their own and without assistance, facing this problem and reintegrating them into society. More specifically, a description was made of the various disabilities that exist and then various assistive technologies/solutions for their treatment were presented. Next, reference was made to the accessible HTML forms and instructions were given for their proper and accessible construction. Then, some HTML accessible forms were created as an introduction to the PDF accessible forms. After that, online PDF form development tools, PDF form development applications on Mac computers and PDF form development applications on Windows computers, tools for viewing and filling in the forms and tools for checking the accessibility of the forms were presented, where information was provided for each of them. Once the PDF forms were created with all the form development tools found, accessibility checks were performed on the forms with the accessibility check tools. For the forms that presented accessibility problems, it was examined whether these problems could be corrected by the editor in which they were made. However, in all the forms that accessibility problems were identified, it was found that they could not be corrected. In the forms where no accessibility problems were found, the tools from which they were made can give an accessible result and for each of these tools, instructions for their use were developed at the end.
