Popular Protest in Late Middle Ages: The role of Essex and Kent in the Peasant's Revolt of 1381
Summary:
For the western part of the European continent, the 14th century was a period marked by a multitude of popular revolutionary movements. One of them is the subject of the present study. More specifically in its pages, an attempt is made for a comprehensive approach to the English Peasant’s Revolt, which broke out in 1381. This year was the time when the ever-escalating discontent of the English population was finally expressed in practice through the armed reaction against the representatives of the ruling elite. The Uprising of 1381 has attracted the attention of many historians over the years. As a result, the events that make it up are more or less known. So the main goal of the writer was not a simple recording of the chronicle of the Peasant’s Revolt but the search for the deeper causes that led to it. First, an attempt is made to be presented the general conditions that prevailed in 14th century England and which contributed to the emergence of a revolutionary climate. Particular emphasis is placed on the consequences of key events such as the Black Death and the Hundred Years' War. According to the available data, the Uprising was triggered by the rural populations of Kent and Essex. As a consequence of that, the present study seeks to shed light on the particular circumstances prevailing in these areas, in an attempt to be justified the decision of the local populations to turn against their lawful lords. Finally, this paper tries to present the aspirations of the revolutionaries and also to evaluate their endeavors.
