Use of satellite imagery and satellite based indicators for the study of the association between extreme weather events and jet streams trajectories in the Mediterranean region
Summary:
Jet streams play an important role regarding the prevailing weather conditions in Europe and the Mediterranean area. To this end, extensive research is done in order to recognize their contribution to weather development. The polar Jetstream lies at 50ο-60ο latitude North and is associated with midlatitude troughs, whereas the subtropical jet lies at 30ο North. In rare occasions the two, usually separated, jet streams, are superposed at the same latitude, with the result of the superposition being the alteration of the dynamics the Jet streams. The Mediterranean is a region where significant weather development occurs due to a number of factors like heat flux from sea surface and the morphology of the surrounding area. Thus the superposition of jet streams and their possible association to extreme weather in the same region poses an interesting research field. The goal of this paper is to identify jet streams’ superposition events in the Mediterranean region for the period for the period 2004-2019 (November to March), to search for indicators of the superposition at satellite images/products and to examine their connection to extreme weather events. The results show that although jet stream superpositions are rare events, they are usually associated with high impact weather events.
