Comparison of the technical and tactical parameters as performance indicators of Olympiacos & AEK. in the 1st round of the Superleague 2015-16
Summary:
The study at hand is meant to analyze the different technical aspects and tactical
elements of organization in the team of SuperLeague champions Olympiakos as well
as the third placing team A.E.K. in the first leg of the 2015-16 season, in order to
provide greater insight in the correlation between these points of interest and the
effectiveness of each team's performance.
Each fixture featuring these teams during the aforementioned period of time was hence
analyzed with all key elements being gathered through the INSTAT SCOUT profiling
platform. These elements primarily consisted of: number of goals achieved, shots
attempted and shots on target, number of successful or otherwise passes, ball
possession, one on one encounters and finally an observation of various attacking
formations. The documentation of these elements was achieved through the use of
statistical parameters such as frequency (f & %f), averages (MO), standard deviation
(TA) as well as maximum (MAX) and minimum (MIN) values. Please note that the
significance level of the analysis of variance for this comparison is set to 0.05, hence
posing a 5% risk of there not being an actual significant difference between values
measured.
Taking a closer look at the results one can observe an average of 2.7±1.1 goals achieved
for Olympiakos while A.E.K averaged at 1.6±1.4 per match. Additionally, Olympiakos
attempted an average of 15.2±4.7 shots per game, 6.5±2.7 of which were found to be
on target while correspondingly, A.E.K attempted an average of 12.9±5.8 shots per
game, 5.1±2.9 of which were accurate. We can hence deduct a success ratio between
goals achieved and total shots on target attempted by each team, which stands at 41.5%
(2.7) for Olympiakos and at 31.4% (1.6) for A.E.K. Both teams exhibited a high ratio
of success as far as passing is concerned, standing at 83.9% for Olympiakos with
500.6±123.6 passes completed out of 596.5±125.5 passes attempted, while A.E.K.
completed 442.4±93.7 out of a total of 538.5±95.3 passes attempted, managing an
overall 82.2%. Consequently, as a direct result of higher consistency in Olympiakos’s
passing, Olympiakos managed to accrue a higher percentage of the game in possession
of the ball, averaging at about 64.2% as opposed to A.E.K.’s 55.9% In conclusion, Olympiakos exceeds most tested elements and as a result the team won
the first place in the league. The results of the current analysis will form most efficient
configuration of coaching schedules that leads to better performance of the above
elements.
