Summary:
“The Greek American agreement, regarding military bases (1983), as an aspect of public debate: its reception by daily press”
The Greek American agreement, regarding military bases as an aspect of public debate, consists the subject of the present study. The examination of the agreement was conducted by the Greek daily press, specifically by the newspapers: Kathimerini, Ta Nea and Rizospastis. The present study aims showcasing the diverse stance of each newspaper, in connection with the respective political parties, each newspaper was affiliated with. As each newspaper was representing a specific political space, being identified with the respective political party, the present study aims recording opinions and theses from the whole political spectrum. In addition to daily press, further bibliography was utilized, which was divided in two axes. The first axis was connected with foreign policy, formulated by the post-civil war governments, which shouldered the integration of Greece in the western camp, as well as with the foreign policy, which Andreas Papandreou implemented, during his first tenure. The second axis pertained to PASOK itself and its leader.
The first section of the study is dedicated to the history of the American factor in Greece, for the period 1945-1974, which was mainly connected with the issue of the military bases. In the second section, the notions populism and anti-Americanism are summarily analyzed, the rhetoric of the leader of PASOK, while belonging to the opposition, regarding the issue of the military bases, being subsequently discussed. In the next section, the text of the agreement, along with accompanying appendices, are researched. Finally, in the fourth section, the way the three inspected newspapers perceived the agreement, is clarified. The subject matter of Kathimerini was based on the deconstruction of Andrea Papandreou’s facade and the prevalent role of Konstantinos Karamanlis, as well as the bilingualism of PASOK. On the other side, the signing of the agreement, provided the newspaper Ta Nea the footing, necessary for praising the prime minister and the fighting stance he adopted. Finally, Rizospastis interpreted the agreement as a continuity accord, regarding the military bases, thus concentrating its criticism towards the prime minister, while showcasing the rallies, conducted at the time.
