Women in public life: The media representation of Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris according to the axes of femininity, social class and race
Summary:
As the media representation of Black women varies according to the social and cultural changes of each era, the present study examines how women in public life are portrayed in international media, according to the axes of femininity, class and race. Michelle Obama, former First Lady of the US, and Kamala Harris, Vice President of the US are chosen as case studies. Based on the theory of intersectionality, the aim of this paper is to reveal the challenges experienced by Blacks and mixed-race women in the political arena in different socio-political periods. The research concludes that despite the progress made in the US on the issue of racial equality, the transition to a post-racial era remains a myth.
