E-LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR TRAINING OF KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS ON SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL COMPETENCES
Summary:
This research presents the design, development, use and evaluation of a Social and Emotional e-Learning environment within the lifelong learning and training process of kindergarten teachers. This study was implemented as part of the master thesis of the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program "Information and Communication Technologies for Education".
The problem that prevails in the field of research is the lack of Social and Emotional Learning programs, which are addressed to teachers and not to children. In addition, the research is even more limited for similar programs, could be implemented remotely through e-Learning. At the same time, psychometric tools for assessing Emotional Intelligence are closed and require payment.
The aim of the intervention was to enhance the Social and Emotional Skills of the participants, through an "Emotion Workshop" in the Moodle Learning Management System. The design of the whole program was based on a variety of theoretical and experiential activities, which the trainees could attend asynchronously based on their own learning rhythm.
The sample of the research consisted of N = 14 kindergarten teachers with professional experience, while the intervention took place in December 2020 and its duration was one month. The study was evaluated with a preliminary (Pre-test) and repeated test (Post-test) by a psychometric tool, that assessed Emotional Intelligence, and was based on the most well- known EQ models that currently exist. This tool was developed for the purposes of the research. For the evaluation were also used learning analytics tools, which monitored students' interaction in the learning platform, during the intervention.
The results showed a slight improvement in the Social and Emotional Skills for the largest part of the sample, but not to such an extent, that it could be considered statistically significant. The repetition of the research consisted by a larger sample and for longer duration is highly recommended.
