The stress of women seeking aesthetic interventions and the role of body dysmorphic disorder
Summary:
Practitioners in cosmetic and aesthetic practices are likely to unknowingly work with patients with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). From the existing literature it appears that there is a vicious circle between stress experienced by these patients, the usually wrong search for a solution to their problem in cosmetic interventions and the dissatisfaction they experience after the outcome of the considered treatment. The main purpose of this study was to record data on the possible diagnosis of BDD in the Greek population among women who wished to have or already had some form of cosmetic intervention. A properly structured questionnaire which aimed to collect information for the socio-demographic characteristics, the BDD possible diagnosis and their stress levels, was completed by 216 adult females from several areas of Attica (four private beauty centers, three dermatology clinics, five plastic surgery clinics, Thriasio General Hospital of Elefsina). Twenty (9.26%) women had a possible diagnosis of BDD (80% were unmarried, 95% had no children, 80% had university education). In addition, the association of BDD with perceived stress was investigated with the results showing that the increase in perceived stress levels was associated with an increased likelihood of being diagnosed with BDD (Pearson r = 0.726). In conclusion, it is of utmost importance to inform all health professionals in the field of aesthetics, surgery or not and to raise their awareness and cooperation in order to identify patients with BDD in a timely manner, so that they can suggest the appropriate treatment approach for them.
