Poetics in the songs of Nikos Gatsos
Summary:
Nikos Gatsos was established as a Greek surrealist poet when he published in Athens the poem Amorgos (1943). However, as he turned exclusively to the fields of translation and lyrics’ writing, literary critics and historians considered him to be poetically silent until the end of his life. Gatsos, although, channeled the characteristics of his poetry into both his translations and his songs, with which this thesis deals exclusively. As an excellent connoisseur and manipulator of the influences of modern Greek poetry, his lyrical work combines surreal features, elements of the Greek folk song and he also handles creatively his personal influences from other Greek poets. The surrealistic conception of the dream, which is evident in the whole of his songs, and the use of symbols that combine all of the above influences, make enough evidence to prove that Nikos Gatsos' songs should be considered an organic part of his poetry and that the characterization of him being "the poet of just one poem" should not be considered as legit.
