Rectal cancer with liver metastases
Summary:
This bibliographic review presents the latest information in regards to treating patients with primary rectal cancer with synchronous liver metastases.
Given that a large number of patients presents with this diagnosis, doctors are
expected to perform a multisystemic approach, resolving both surgical
pathologic entities. The lack of large multicenter trials and studies, leaves the
multidisciplinary team with only a few algorithms to base their treatment on.
The continuous and parallel progress of the disease both in the liver and the
rectum, create obstacles with the prioritization of the treatment. Small
retrospective studies from hospitals and universities from all around the world,
provide us with the optimal treatment until a larger multicenter study comes
up with better and more efficient therapeutic guidelines.
