School bullying to middle high school students and its relationship between hyperactivity, body mass index, the role of teachers and parental unemployment: A cross- sectional study
Summary:
Background: School bullying is a form of aggressive behavior, being a multidimensional social phenomenon with various manifestations and consequences in the psychosocial life of adolescents.
Aim: The aim of this cross-sectional study is to correlate school bullying with hyperactivity, body mass index, the role of teachers and parental unemployment in a Greek high school student population.
Methods: The research was carried out in the framework of the intercultural transnational school study "Eurasian Child Mental Health Study (EACMHS)" which concerned the psychosocial well-being of adolescents. The study involved 1,581 high school students, of whom 737 were boys and 844 girls, with a mean age of 13.1 years. For the data collection, the following were used: (a) the Greek version of the "Questionnaire of Possibilities and Difficulties" (SDQ-HEL), (b) the "Bullying and cyberbullying experiences" questionnaire, and (c) self-report questions on body mass index, the role of teachers and parental unemployment.
Results: The findings showed that bullies and victim-bullies, had a higher score in the hyperactivity dimension comparing to victims (p <0,001 and p<0,001 respectively). Bullies have a significantly more negative view of the role of educators and their relationship with them comparing with adolescents being neither victims nor bullies (p<0,001 for all comparisons). Parental unemployment seems to be a statistically significant factor in adolescent’s victimization (p=0,003). Finally, no statistically significant difference was found in the correlation of body mass index with school bullying experiences.
Conclusions: In conclusion, the results of the present study show that it is necessary to immediately address school bullying through targeted programs as it is identified as a phenomenon with serious psychosocial consequences for adolescents.
