Assessment of knowledge in Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation of secondary education teaching staff in the Attica region
Summary:
Introduction: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the basic skills that both
health professionals and ordinary citizens need to have. Its benefits in the event of a
heart attack, that is, in an emergency, are many. For this reason, training in Basic Life
Support, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillation,
according to the law is necessary for all citizens.
Aim: The aim of this reasearch is on the one hand to present in a simple and
understandable way the basic principles of providing CPR and outpatient defibrillation
and on the other hand to examine the knowledge of the secondary education teaching
staff of the prefecture of Attica, Greece.
Methodology: For the completion of the research objectives and the collection of
research data a closed type questionnaire was used as a research tool. The questionnaire
consists of 20 questions, of which the first 4 questions concern the demographic
characteristics of the participants (gender, age, educational level) while the remaining
questions explore the knowledge of the teaching staff about cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, but also the desire to be trained in CPR.
Results: 426 secondary school teachers in the Attica region participated in the survey.
86% of respondents are women and 14% men. The average age of the participants was
35 years. 67% are graduates of higher education and the average work experience was
8 years. 57% have never attended a CPR seminar. 87% would like to have a periodic
repetitive training. Only 16% answered that they have personal experiences from the
application of CPR, of which the largest percentage (44%) once applied
cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Regarding the first step they take in an unconscious
person, only 10% use CPR. The percentage of the sample who answered that they do
not know / do not answer about the correct number of chest compressions is 46%, about
the placement of the fingers when applying chest compressions is 34%, about the
correct depth of compressions is 51% and about the complications of the application of
CPR 41%. In addition, 60% do not believe that there is a risk of transmitting infectious
diseases during the application of CPR. According to 69%, a patient who has suffered
relapse and resuscitation outside the hospital has a high survival rate. 34% believe that
the criterion for the termination of CPR in adults is the definite lack of circulatory
response, 13% the exhaustion of the rescuer after 1 hour of hard work, and 34% all
suggested replies. Age (p = 0.022) and attendance at seminars (p = 0.001) affect
participants' desire to receive periodically repeated training in basic CPR. Education
level (p = 0.023), years of professional experience (p = 0.012) and attending seminars
(p = 0.000) affect what is the first step they take in an unconscious person, while
experience (p <0.05) ) and the attendance of seminars (p <0.05) affect the answers for
where the chest compressions are made and for the correct depth of the compressions.
Conclusions: It is therefore clear that there is a need to organize training seminars, as
their profession includes a daily gathering with students.
