Original Title:
Η κινηματογραφική πόλη ως κείμενο: διαβάζοντας τις πόλεις του Jim Jarmusch
Translated title:
The cinematic city as text: reading Jim Jarmusch's cities
Summary:
The bond between the city and the film has been acknowledged and studied by a variety of academic fields. One of the theoretical approaches towards the city perceives it as a text, whose reading involves multiple meanings. Similarly, the film has also been perceived as a text, providing a variety of narratives. Drawing from a wide range of academic theories, this paper deals with the ways that the film can be used as a text with urban narratives, studying the case of the American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. The analysis of the spaces, the language, the history, the music and the everyday life of Jarmusch’s cities reveals a postmodern discourse, which, in contrast to the narratives of the common American films, promotes the trivial, the marginal and the insignificant, thus uncovering the multiple layers of real America.
