NICU staff perceptions about the Influence of Specific Stressors Faced by Parents of very premature newborns at NICU
Summary:
Parents of premature infants usually experience separation from their infant or exclusion from their role as primary caregivers during their infant hospitalization, which can affect infant parental attachment and parental well-being.
Purpose: To record parenting stress levels based on factors that influence it inside and outside MENN in our country. Also record the perception of the MENN obstetrician staff about the stress experienced by parents of newborns hospitalized.
Also explore the extent to which staff experience influences their perception of parental stress and the role staff can play in helping parents reduce their stress.
Methodology: Two samples were used in the study. Sample A includes parents who gave birth to preterm infants <32 weeks of age and have a good understanding of Greek and English (n = 30). Sample B includes the MENN obstetrician staff at Alexandra General Hospital (n = 30). The NICU parental scale (PSS: NICU) questionnaire with 46 closed-ended questionnaires and five-point Likert-scale questionnaires was translated to record the stress levels experienced by parents of preterm infants <32 weeks.
Conclusions: Pictures and sounds indicate that as the age of pregnancy increased, so did parents' anxiety in this category. Birth weight was statistically significant and negatively associated with both parental role change (r = -0.496, p = 0.005), and pictures and sounds (r = -0.622, p <0.001).
