Summary:
Abstract
The tourism sector is an important source of growth and revenue for each country. Especially for Greece, which is a country with a rich history and cultural heritage, the tourism sector has become a dominant element of the country's economic activity, contributing 25% to GDP. With more than 16,000 kilometers of coastline and around 6,000 islands and islets, it has become a popular destination in recent years both in the summer months, offering the classic product "sun and sea", as well as the rest of the year with attractive thematic tourism proposals. Even during the period of economic crisis, tourism has been an important pillar of growth, showing an increase in revenues and arrivals of travelers.
One phenomenon that our country is facing is the strong regional disparities, due to the geographical diversity that characterizes it. The island areas are growing faster, due to the high tourist traffic they have. Aiming to reduce existing inequalities, in recent years the European Union has played an important role in firming regional policy, promoting measures to stimulate economic growth and employment and improve the quality of life through strategic investments. Tourism could be a useful tool to achieve this goal.
Especially for the region of Crete, tourism has a dominant role in its development, as it increases incomes and improves the living standards of its inhabitants. With a large number of tourist accommodation and countless attractions, it is an attraction for millions of tourists every year. The support and upgrading of tourism is one of the main priorities of the region, as it has high tourist resources and quality infrastructure that could be a lever for the development of the island.
