Dermoscopy in the diagnosis of onychomycosis
Summary:
Onychomycosis is the most common nail disorder and its prevalence varies from 10% in the general population and up to 40% among the elderly. Dermatophytes are the most common causative agents followed by Candida sp. and non-dermatophyte moulds. Diagnosis of onychomycosis can be made through many methods. Dermoscopy appears to be a rapid and useful tool in the diagnosis of onychomycosis. It allows prompt and nonprocedural assessment of the entire nail unit ompared to mycological examinations.
