The environmental impact on skin aging and its treatment
Summary:
Skin is the body’s first natural obstacle against environmental agents, providing a permeability barrier for transdermal drug delivery.
Some of the environmental factors that can lead to skin disorders and premature aging, are air pollution, solar radiation, smoking, while recently is gathering great interest in the effect of artificial visible light of screens on the skin.
Mesotherapy is the method, which induces the transdermal drug delivery in order to repair skin damage from the effects of both intrinsic and extrinsic aging. The forms of Mesotherapy consist of injectable and non-injectable methods.
Injectable methods include microneedling, which targets at the epidermis and the level of the upper dermis, intradermal and subcutaneous injections for permeation of substances such as botulinum toxin type A, hyaluronic acid, plasma which is rich in platelets and growth factors, adipose derived stem cells, as well as materials intended for both injectable and non-injectable applications of mesotherapy.
The most common and effective methods of non-injectable mesotherapy include iontophoresis, electroporation and phonophoresis. These methods are capable of increasing skin permeability and transdermal release of active ingredients, such as peptides, vitamins, antioxidants, growth factors and stem cells, which are encapsulated in effective nanoscale delivery vehicles, thus overcoming the skin barrier.
Although Nanotechnology is an emerging field that provides numerous applications in Cosmetology, it can hide risks to both the Environment and the Human Health.
