Summary:
Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) and Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) are two pinnacles of 20th Century’s Art. Hailing both from the Surrealist Group of the late 20s and early 30s Parisian Avant Garde, they both possess a signature iconoclastic humour and an audacious tendency towards the provocative, which does not, however, deprive them of spirituality, poetry and depth. They are of course closely related: they both investigate the notion of trauma; Buñuel examines the Sisyphean martyrdom of one’s inability to fulfil one’s desires. Dali, on the other hand, navigates us through the detailed cartography of a universe consisted by fear, guilt and desire.
What we study here is their only collaboration, the two films they created from 1929 to 1930: Un Chien Andalou and L’Age D’Or. We aim to examine their intention to create poetry in the form of film, while stretching the limits of the cinematic medium and finally launching an all new way to filmmaking: a surreal one.
