Summary:
The smooth integration of students with different cultural backgrounds in a school unit is an important factor for its effective operation, and consequently for achieving the educational goals it is called to achieve. The director of a multicultural school unit is the key person, as he is called to ensure the positive climate required for the harmonious operation of the unit. The present work seeks to investigate the role of the director in shaping a positive climate of an intercultural school and moreover review the prevailing situation in the Greek educational system as well as to draw useful conclusions and suggestions for the improvement of intercultural schools. Firstly, the theoretical part is being studied intercultural education and models of managing diversity are being
studied followed by the leadership of the education, the duties and responsibilities of the Principal of the school unit. Then the concept of school climate is presented, in the creation of which the role of the Principal is essential as well as his contribution to the multicultural school. Regarding the second research part, this investigation was conducted through semi-structured interviews with ten Principals of Primary Schools so that their views can be processed according to their duties and experience. The results of the dissertation prove that our educational system is still unprepared to deal effectively with the phenomenon of multiculturalism and at the same time confirms the dominant role of the school principal in creating a positive school climate as follows democratic decision-making processes through the institutions.
