Summary:
In the present dissertation, research on the Holy Communion has been conducted, based on the teachings of the Greek Holy Fathers from the 20th century: Nectarios of Aegina, Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia, Paisios the Athonite and Jacob Tsalikis. The thesis is divided in three chapters that present the preparation for the Holy Communion, how to attend to and to receive the Sacraments and what benefits they have. The contemporary saints follow the same wisdom of the church and teach us that the necessary preparation before receiving the Holy Communion consists in: repentance and sincere confession in front of the spiritual father, without shame, but with self-condemnation and humility, accompanied by a fasting time, abstinence and much love for Christ. Regarding the frequency of receiving the Sacraments, the modern Fathers say that we must have a continuous participation in the Holy Communion. When one is worthy of the Holy Communion, it is taken for “the forgiveness of the sins and the afterlife”. In this way, the forgiveness of the sins is sealed and fulfilled, through the Holy Confession. Redeemed from sins, the believer receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which Saint. Paul reminds us of (Galatians 5:22). Finally, through the Holy Communion we receive the pharmakon athanasias (the immortality medicine) and fully unite with Christ and with each other (with our living kind and with those who have passed away), like parts of the same Body.
