The views of directors on their training needs in terms of management and development of human resources in education: Primary School principals' case in Attica county
Summary:
The successful formation of a school environment that will follow the requirements of modern society presupposes a high quality educational potential. At the same time, the school principal as the head of a school unit, which brings together many management and not only functions, is called to meet the needs of the modern school. Thus, the acquisition of skills, such as human resource management, presupposes the existence of training programs aimed at Education Executives. The purpose of this paper is the initial investigation and recognition of the training need of primary school principals, in matters relating to their skills in managing and developing the human resources of their school unit. The sample of the research consisted of 103 principals of primary schools of the Prefecture of Attica. The results of the research showed that the vast majority of principals consider their training and professional development to be very important in matters concerning the management and development of the human resources of education. They also recognize the need for participation in training activities of both the principals themselves and the teaching staff of their school. In addition, managers recognize their role as guides and supporters in the professional development of their teaching staff. In addition, they consider the initial reception and integration of newly hired teachers in their school unit to be of great importance, as the majority of principals apply various methods to achieve this. Finally, it is clear from the positions of the directors regarding the support and repressive factors and their participation in training programs, that they want to upgrade their role, with the possibility of providing greater autonomy in the performance of their duties.
