Economic evaluation of antiretroviral drugs for HIV-positive patients (in Greek society / market) and their impact on the quality of life of patients and society
Summary:
One of the most important problems highlighted by the financial crisis and the memoranda is the availability of limited financial resources and their proper management. Healthcare systems should manage the scarce and limited resources in such a way as to improve patients' health and lifestyle, to maintain the person’s good health, to optimize and maximize their quality of life, thus leading gradually the population to social prosperity. Because of these, the competent authorities are often called upon to conduct financial assessments in order for political decisions to be made for the benefit of the society in general and of the healthcare systems. In this context, we try to focus on the health problem of HIV-positive patients and highlight the chronic and major health problem for the patients themselves, their families and society as a whole. The purpose is to document that the cost of drugs is not that burdensome for healthcare budgets in proportion to the short-term and long-term benefits (hidden or obvious) of drugs.
The purpose of this dissertation is the financial evaluation of drugs and their impact on Greek society by first analyzing the cost of drugs versus their effectiveness, and then reporting the cost-benefit and cost-utility comparisons, while evaluating their results. The source of information was the literature, the website of the National Public Health Organization (NPHO), the website of the Ministry of Health, the website of the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) and medical file patients of the Georgios Ploumidis office.
The results, as analyzed in postgraduate work, showed that patients with antiretroviral therapy and new formulations managed to improve and have a good quality of life over the decade (2011-2020), with a good immune health system. Over these years, the prices of antiretroviral therapies have fallen, resulting in savings.
