Experimental Research of the Impact of the Weather Conditions in the Attenuation of the Optical Signal for Wireless Communications
Summary:
The Free Space Optics Communications, consist a wireless communication system in which the visible and the infrared spectrum of the electromagnetic radiation is used for the transfer of the information while the propagation’s channel of the wireless link is the atmosphere. During the last decades the development and the applications of these systems are remarkable. The reason for this, is the fact that FSO systems are characterized from a variety of advantages such as high performance, reliability and the ease of deployment. These characteristics can make the optical wireless communication systems th appropriate technology which can support networks of 5th generation and above.

Because of the fact that the channel of the transfer of the information is the atmosphere, the performance of the FSO systems depends strongly from the weather phenomena which take place in the region of the wireless link. In this work we will develop an empirical regression model which will calculate the attenuation coefficient for a terrestrial optical wireless link which is deployed in a maritime environment.

The experimental model is going to have two editions with the first one corresponding to winter season and the second one to summer season respectfully. The atmospheric variables which we are going to correlate with the attenuation coefficient is temperature, relative humidity and wind speed. It is worth mentioning that the importance of such a model comes from the fact that the maritime environments are characterized from many particularities.
