Diplomatic relations between Byzantium and Western Europe in the period 1025-1081
Summary:
Byzantine diplomacy emerges as a factor of paramount importance for the long survival of the Empire. Through the study of diplomatic relations between Byzantium and Western Europe in the period 1025-1081, it is possible to outline part of the foreign policy of the Byzantine Empire on the Western front and, above all, the geostrategic direction it took in relation to the dominant political and ecclesiastical entities of the West. The period in question is an unsolvable puzzle for modern scholars, as the empire transitions from the military triumphs of the Macedonian emperors to the defeats of Bari and Magikert. The present thesis attempts to present, on the one hand, the imperial policy in the Byzantine provinces of the Italian peninsula, and on the other hand, the relations that Byzantium developed with the German Empire, the Holy See and the Normans.
First, we examine the policy of the Byzantine emperors in southern Italy in the period 1025-1081. The research then focuses on the embassies exchanged between the Byzantine Empire and the German Empire, with the latter being the most powerful secular power in the West. The study then focuses on the diplomatic relations that developed between the Byzantine Empire and the Holy See, in the light of Schism, and on the actions of Constantine X and Michael VII Doukas. Finally, Michael VII's proposed marriage contract with Robert Guiscard, leader of the Normans, is analysed.
